Sterling Silver is .925 fine silver and .075 copper. Because pure silver is too soft to render a ring durable enough for everyday wear copper is added to harden the silver and add strength. It is this added copper which reacts with air and moisture and tarnishes sterling silver to a dark patina over time.
To keep your sterling silver from tarnishing too quickly, it is best to keep it stored in air tight plastic bags or anti-tarnish pouches.
To clean your sterling silver jewelry back to a bright luster use a soft cloth and silver polish or our own B Jewelry polishing cloth. Avoid paper towels and abrasive cleansers, sterling silver can still be scratched easily. Chemicals in household cleansers like chlorine; perfumes, sunblocks and perspiration can also affect the patina of sterling silver. If your jewelry should come into contact with such agents immediately rinse in mild soapy water and dry off completely with a soft cloth.
